    Congressional support in both houses:

summary of basic elements of the deal

    House roll call

That would be the 2011 vote to raise the debt ceiling and cut what social safety net we have.  Note that half of all House Democrats supported what Rep. Emanuel Cleaver called the "shit sandwich".  Indeed, half of the so-called "House Progressive Caucus" supported this same POS, essentially giving in to GOP blackmail, with absolutely no gain of any kind.

If you have half of that caucus behind a bill, you've easily got more than 60 Senators, the Senate being a far more conservative body where smart policy goes to die.  Likely there are a dozen who already support it but haven't made a public commitment yet because it's not yet electorally "safe".

    •  but this year we have no (0+ / 0-)

      debt ceiling hostage.

      •  Democrats have already shown their susceptibility (0+ / 0-)

to the hostage-taking tactic;  indeed, that wasn't the first or last time the Republicans used it successfully against them.

My whole point in this entire line of exchange:  Republicans have demonstrated quite clearly that they don't need an actual majority in either chamber of Congress in order to actually control it.
