In fact, I can't remember ever doing this before, so here goes.  I'm actually going to defend Mitt Romney just a little bit.  I feel icky doing that but it's just a matter of basic honesty:

For the sitting president, he has the job and the authority to direct relief efforts.  For the candidate running for president who isn't currently president, he has the job of getting the hell out of the way.  At most all he can really do is offer sympathy and make a donation (and for his lack of doing THAT, yes, Mitt should be criticized fully).  But those two things - offering sympathy and donations - don't require a direct phone call to the governor to bother him and waste his time while he's trying to respond to the disaster, nor would such a phone call even help efforts at all.  It would just be an obvious electioneering pandering stunt.

So, no, I hate the guy and feel icky "defending" him, but really, refraining from the temptation to call the governor of a disaster-stricken state while he's busy responding to said disaster is exactly what Mitt Romney should be doing.  He should be staying the hell out of the way and not interfering with those who ARE in office and thus positioned to run the relief efforts.  Any call he makes to Christie now would be siphoning away Christie's time away from his job of coordinating disaster relief.
