    Is it that stem cell research is banned, or is it that federally funded stem cell research is banned?

    I believe it's the latter, and the problem is that so much of the research going on in general touches a federal grant.

    But I believe that several states such as California are going to use state funding for this research.

    A real republican, not these people like Frist (and by Frist I mean Dobson) who are for small government and lower taxes, could oppose this type of research by saying it is better done by private entities than the government.  However we all know that this was not this president's motivation - he really does belong back in the dark ages, where suggesting that the Earth was not the center of the universe was grounds for being burned at the stake.
