  •  I say the pledge at schools when I visit to teach (7+ / 0-)

about history. I never ever say "Under God". When called upon it I always state that the time period that they are paying me to portray did no have those words in the pledge. Many people are unaware that those two words (and they really are JUST words) we inserted during the time of the cold war.

I laughed when an administrator said, "We'll see about that". That school was in a very red area full of ignorance. Grammar was not a friend of the students or the staff.

While not all republicans are bigots, all bigots are republicans.

    •  Bless you. I have NEVER put "under god" in pledge (0+ / 0-)

I was only a grade school kid when they tried to "retrain" us in a big school assembly. I knew it was wrong immediately.

The pledge was written as a jingle to promote flag sales to schools.  The preacher who wrote it deliberately left god out.  When first introduced -- there were civil war sour grapers who objected to "indivisible" as a dig at confederates.

Our original "motto" was E Pluribus Unum --- from many, one.  Stressing unity.

They shoehorned god into our govt. with the flim flam that we must define ourselves as different from the "godless communists."

If we don't learn history --- we repeat dumb mistakes like theocracy.

We destroy "indivisible" by wedging in the word "God."  How?  Forced oath using male single deity --- immediately excludes our citizens who prefer to pray to Allah, Gods, Goddess, Goddesses, none of the above, and all faiths that do not have a deity as part of their religious path. It is a false swearing which ignores biblical "render unto caesar" warning to keep separate religion & govt.

IMHO Sandy is a warning from Mother Nature ---- y'all WOMEN need to defend yourselves from the destructive storm aimed at you by Romney/Ryan and enshrined in Republican party platform.

PS -- Since you teach, I often use y'all  (which we thought was an ignorant southernism in my yankee youth)  to fix a flaw in standard English.   The personal pronoun "you" should not be both singular & plural.  One should be "you" and more than one should be "y'all."    Speech is supposed to communicate accurately.  But then, I'm a well known yankee agitating troublemaking  female.
