one takes their place" Actually .... The bad guys who are being overthrown now are all dictators  the Cold War powers installed, supported politically (UN vetoes) and supplied with money and guns to stay in power. All  these countries -- Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Yemen -- were only pawns in the international dick-measuring contest between the US and the Soviet Union -- "look, all THESE guys are on MY side and hate YOU". Though in fact the guys in those countries not on the "right side" -- nationalists, neutralists, anybody not in any "accepted" party -- were persecuted, imprisoned, killed.  Shah of Iran (US installed by coup, replaced in popular uprising by the Soviet-backed mullahs), Khadaffi (who the West was  against, then for, then against again), al-Assad (Soviet-installed), Mubarak, Saleh (who figured out as long as he claimed the patriots trying to make a better Yemen were Al-Quaeda the US would shovel millions of dollars his way for "freedom") -- the list goes on and on, back through the entire Cold War.  Viet Nam, Guatemala, Cuba -- the list of pawns goes runs worldwide. History will note that the Cold War was as damaging and as repressive as the colonial period of the European powers.
Now, the Cold War is over, nobody is counting pawns anymore, any country (Jordan, Syria) without an actual economic resource the big countries need  are left to stumble and bleed their way forward with little if any help from the big powers.
What this means is that it's not a given that another "bad guy" will just take over, since anyone today in a war-ravenged country trying to do so still needs a big political sugar daddy to foot the bill for the new dictatorship.
Syria will eventually be overthrown, but it will be nowhere as bloody as the coming revolution in Iran. And that conflict will  be eclipsed in savagery by the revolution in Saudi Arabia, unfortunately mosr so because the US will intervene on the side of the government with arms and money.
