  •  My wife worked three days in shelters last week (9+ / 0-)

    as a doctor. They turned the Park Slope Armory into a nursing home, transferring patients from flooded nursing homes. While the city staff at the shelter were detailed from their usual jobs, she volunteered pro bono as part of the city's Medical Reserve Corps.

      I live only three blocks from the Armory, but because they asked for volunteers with medical training, and also wanted people able to do a 12-hour shift, I chose to work at a general-population shelter only a few blocks further away.

      Believe me, I didn't feel like I was wasting my time there, either.
