    Nothing new to be seen here.

    If you pay close attention, apparently her husband is one of those poor schmucks who could not/couldn't afford to leave his job to assist his family (works for NY Sanitation Dept). "Wage slavery" has a very real meaning in this context.

    PS: the husband is white, but still one of the Underclass.

    The whole story illustrates in one way or another everything that is wrong, sick, and rotten with America today.

      be careful, they were not the "underclass" as sociologists and others understand it. they were solidly middle to upper middle class depending on the husband's wages--nyc sanitation workers can do very well, they were married as well. and even those markers of "middle class" identity didn't trump her being black and a woman.
