    poor towns. Small farms, towns that lost their manufacturing capacity years ago, the kinds of places that kids leave as soon as they can, and too many do it via the military. But a playground for city folks who can afford second homes and summer tickets in Saratoga and winter skiing. So an interesting mix of prosperous newcomers, old families, and hardscrabble.

    A lot of northern New England is that way, too, when you get beyond the glossy tourist brochures and go a few miles inland from the coast.

    The writing in these books is very good, excellent plotting. As I said, they are a bit dark, but realistic. I'm reading the fourth, or maybe fifth, right now, and there's an overall story and character-development arc.
