    it is done pretty quickly, you mark your paper ballot and then it gets dropped in the box.

    In addition to set advance polling dates, you can practically vote any time after the candidates are set in the returning office (i.e. the office that will collect the votes for the riding)

    In those cases, you are given a piece of paper to write the candidate's name in and are given two envelopes. The inner one for the ballot and the outer one for tracking/verification purposes.

    The only major change in past number was a switch to a permanent voting roll. It gets updated from various sources including citizenship data, and even from a box on your tax return.

    Before then, they actually enumerated all electors during each election period. Changing to a permanent roll allowed minimum election duration to be shrunk form 60 days to 36 days.
