Sorry to jump postings but this diary's title burns me as a long time UAW member and officer.

Chrysler DID NOT give their workers the day off to vote.  This was negotiated back in the 90's by the UAW with the Big Three. That is how strongly the UAW feels about voting and GOTV. The idea was and is is to get our members out to work the polls on election day. Believe me, every contract this day comes up at the table by the companies. So let's give credit to where it is due - the UAW.

in the most recent election cycles?
If so, then this could just be a PR move by Chrysler Management, "See how cool we are, we encourage Voting!"
Or it could be a subtle push to get not only the Chrysler workers but people who sympathize with UAW and their people, out to re-elect the President that saved their livelihoods.
Personally, I'd like to see Election day be a National Holiday when everything other than essential services are shut down and if you have to work it, it's goldentime. It's far more important to America than Christmas, even more than 4th of July.
And not switched to Monday, either. If it's rolled into a long weekend, people will vacate rather than vote.

A grateful UAW member to have this negotiated holiday it wound me up too, I wish it was a holiday for everyone.
