    My wife also grew up under a dictatorship--though one to the south rather than the east, and which was installed in power thanks to Nixon, Kissinger, and company (if you know your history, you may be able to guess which one).  We've been married for 18 years and she had been a legal resident for most of that time, but always swore that she could never become a U.S. citizen because American covert intervention had caused so much pain and suffering to her country.  She volunteered along with me to help elect President Obama in 2008, but wasn't able to vote then.  But in the years since then, the GOP war on Latinos made her so mad that she finally decided to become a citizen (our experience with the swearing in ceremony was similar to yours) so that she could vote for Obama and against all the Republicans on the ballot.
