  •  RIP to the GOP as currently constituted, maybe... (0+ / 0-)

Read Krugman's book The Conscience of a Liberal.  He shows what happened to the Republican Party after the New Deal and the Truman Administration.

Before FDR, Republicans were much like the Republicans of today.  Rich, uncaring for the poor and working class (there wasn't much of a middle class at all).

After Truman, they had to support Social Security to get elected.  They needed union votes to get elected.  So they became more liberal.  From the 1950s through the 1980s there was a large group of liberal and moderate Republicans in Congress.  Congress was not polarized as it is today - and was before FDR.  Bipartisan compromises were possible because a sufficient number of legislators from both parties shared values and visions of how to move the country forward.

There have always been Republican extremists, but in the postwar period they did not dominate the party.  That day will come again.

Close your eyes, stop your ears Close your mouth and take it slow Let others take the lead and you bring up the rear And later you can say you didn't know
