    North Carolina performed poorly for the Dems at the local level. The House went from a 67-52 GOP advantage to a 77-43 Republican lead. While much of this was a result at redistricting, the fact that the North Carolina GOP has gerrymandered the map as successful as they have doesn't bode well moving into mid-term elections and beyond.

    At the presidential level the hope is that the rising urban populations in Charlotte and the research triangle can push N.C. over the top in the coming years. Unlike other places in the south with high growth, these increasing population centers do seem to track more Democratic than conservative.
