  •  "Early voting" is a misnomer. (5+ / 0-)

Your vote isn't earlier than the others.  It's kept in a buffer and looked at AFTER the votes cast on the day of the election.  It's absentee voting.  I never understood why the Democratic party pushed so hard to get people to do absentee voting this year.  It's MORE likely to be tampered with that way than day-of voting.  By the time the absentee ballots are looked at, the people doing the processing of them no longer have proper double-blinded ignorance of the election's outcome.  Putting in a good honest effort of counting 10,000 ballots correctly when you don't know how the election is going is very different from putting in the effort of counting 10,000 ballots correctly when you know the margin is within, 2000 and you know the ballots you have are likely to swing the result.  It becomes impossible to operate in a fog of impartial ignorance at that point.  Suddenly the incentive for corruption is much stronger than it was when nobody knew how much the absentee votes mattered.

I strongly suspect that the Supreme Court decision that got Bush elected by terminating the Florida vote count before it was done in the year 2000 would have been decided properly had the people making the decisions been doing so without knowing how close the race was, and without knowing everything had come down to hinging on this one decision.  Once you know the effect your decision will have, you lose the ability to be impartial about it, and that's why I prefer my vote be counted earliest, which isn't the same thing as having me cast the vote the earliest.  You get your vote counted earliest by voting the day-of in the morning at the polls.
