  •  I suspect there is a strong regional variance in (21+ / 0-)

white support for Obama - so national statistics for the breakdown should really be discarded. If you polled white Americans before the civil you would probably have found a majority either in favour or neutral about slavery - but that would have missed the coalition building against slavery that would help fuel the northern backlash against the Fugitive Slave Act and ultimately precipitate the civil war.

There is a strong regionalism in America, and in those states that are now reliably blue (like Washington where I live) I would presume that Obama has majority support in virtually ALL demographics. As someone on Hannity whined last night (yeah - that's me taking my Schadenfreude out for a walk) - America is becoming like California - and I think that's a good thing.

    •  a bit more than regional (12+ / 0-)

yes it is clearly the case among Southern whites, especially men.   But it is also Appalachian culture, which is more than geographical.  Yes, that runs down from PA through WV, NC, VA, TN & NW GA, but also carries over to MO, AR and OK.

    •  They didn't do exit polls in all states but Obama (0+ / 0-)

mostly got the white vote in mostly white, liberal states.
He always did better with white women than white men but he won white men in states like Vermont and Oregon but in New York and California romney won white men while Obama won the white women.
Odd that. Hispanic and black men voted lower Obama than the females too but not such a drastic difference as with white voters.
Nothing against God but it is thew white religious voters that go republican. Even in the romney states the non-churchgoing whites go Obama
But not the time to get into the Christian-church complex.
Oh pardon, exclude Jewish devoted attendees from above. They go Dem, evidently not threatened with hell for voting for a party that cares for the sick and poor..

In states where he did well with white voters he also tended to do well with all ages but there was a surprising trend in 40 to 49 age group in many states. They'd be the very lowest Obama voting group or the 2nd lowest, just after the 65+. The 50 to 64 would be more pro-Obama then that younger group. (Let us be kind to baby boomers)

Now that I have bashed white men I read the comments after the article and there were plenty who announced themselves as old white men who were very proud Obama voters. They may be the minority but we have to remember not to group them... just like red state residents weary of us bashing those states.

      I wish Vermont was contagious.
