  •  let's not get too full of ourselves. (5+ / 0-)

Part of that youth excitement is because of Obama's coolness factor.

Perhaps a large chunk of it.

It won't be the same, if we put up another old white man next time.

    •  I disagree. (0+ / 0-)

Sure I know people of my generation think Obama is cool, but the excitement over him this election season has been what he has done for us in office combined with how much Romney terrified us. And we know what party has our back right now.

    •  it's more his politics, honestly (1+ / 0-)

the problem isn't old white men quite so much as conservative politics that is saving older generations by serving austerity to the youth.

the kids are more politically savvy than people give them credit for. when the older politicians talk incessantly about "these benefits won't change for people over 55" they can hear the implied "we're gonna fuck those younger workers over instead."

young people care about political policy, and they're well to the left of most elected democrats. politicians assume they can just wow those shallow young voters with attempts at being hip, but it's really their refusal to champion liberal policy that damns them, more than insufficient hipness.

    •  Absolutely, if we nominate another Kerry or Gore (0+ / 0-)

      We will lose in '16.

I am not saying there can't be an inspiring white man, but if the democratic candidate in '16 looks to be a return to the status quo of old school democrats the energy will be gone and so will the presidency.
