But I don't think it will.

It depends on Boehner. If he gives just a little bit, PBO will give away the store to accommodate him. Tragically.

But will the loonies let Boehner do that?

    I wonder ...

    •  It seems any deal in the lame duck will have to (5+ / 0-)

include extending Bush tax cuts for the wealthy which a. would be insane, and b. cause several milllion heads to explode including pretty much ever single Kossack,

These threats of recession if we do go over the cliff seem to be coming mainly from the GOP. It sounds rather like when we were told the banks just had to be bailed out.

Ds see human suffering and wonder what they can do to relieve it. Rs see human suffering and wonder how they can profit from it.

...from the GOP. They don't care about that. Their proposed cuts will cause that. They would happily see the nation catapulted into depression.

The part that is somewhat a fiction is the debt-deficit "emergency." Allowing that to run for now will not harm the economy. Austerity will. Any hint that there is an issue over raising the debt limit, will.

DC will be labeled a moribund power, paralyzed in gridlock, unable to legislate or service its debt, with a shrinking GDP, and a credit risk for global investors over the next two years at least.

The republican strategy is to damage the economy so badly that the 2014 elections will be a slam dunk for the "jobs jobs jobs" party just like 2010.

        •  Obama has options for getting around that (0+ / 0-)

It's daring but it involves using the US Mint to create a Platinum coin and depositing it with the Fed for however much money he needs.

Now imagine Cantor and Boehner's heads exploding...

Who's squealing loudest right now? It's Republicans whose nuts are in the vise.

Who maneuvered them into this position?
