extended response to my mini-outta-state rant.

I love your State as much as any Coloradoan can. Door County is Great! Eagle Lake! I rode my bicycle from the Iron Range to Manitowac. I ate curds in Lake o' Lakes(and 10 other places). I spent a bit of time in Milwaukee County not in the city--in Wauwatosa. Is there another city in the county besides that?
I met some great folks, and it was BEAUTIFUL. People are nice--but I'm a very pale 50 y/o guy. Even in 'tossa, I could feel the hatred for the blacks 5-8 miles up the road. There was an urban fear about the place at Miller Park. (By the way...the cemetary next door to there is rockin! Spend an afternoon walking around there-you'll appreciate what a flu influenza can is as nice of an old cemetary as you'll find, and it is huge with 200 yr old trees and gorgeous crypts and 120-150 y/o head stones.) Anyway-there was no reason for any fear. It was safe, clean, and full of decent folks but people acted like they were about to get mugged at any second. Weird. Your Soweto analagy was spot on. There is a street, a main blvd that you drive down to get to down town-I don't remember it's name. But I swear, when you cross from the County into the City the world changes. A clear line of demarcation. It was sad. It was also like being in the South and passing from the white part of town to the black side of town--the line was clear. It was also clear that as an outsider I was not to interfere with the 'way things are here'. I know how it is that way in many, many places but I still found that odd in Wisconsin. The fact that cheeseheads keep electing repub's simply confounds me, because that doesn't square with the folks I actually met.

Thanks for your interaction with me, and addressing my questions--that's sorta what I expect of a real Wisconsin cheddar eater!
