The difference is that the Democratic Party's coalition is actually in no particular danger of schism. We're more united than ever. Moderate economic and foreign policies are working adequately, and we're making some real progress on social issues. There's a remarkable lack of infighting and has been since...well, I'd put the turning point at about the time DADT repeal passed.

There will always be a few people on the margins whose signature issue isn't getting quite enough attention (and right now the ones focusing on climate change have a very real point: we're not seeing enough movement) who threaten to split, but for now, we're safe.

Republicans have national figures making this sort of comment. Granted, Herman Cain is a fringe Republican, but...are there any mainstream Republicans anymore?

"Let’s just move on, treat everybody with firmness, fairness, dignity, compassion and respect. Let’s be Marines." - Sgt. Maj Michael Barrett on DADT repeal
