In fact, Tuchman in one of her books talks about Jaures as the last chance to prevent the war.  He was respected by the German socialists, too.  And, there were those who believed that he could convince the workers on both sides that they had more in common against the capitalists.

The last time I was in Paris my wife and I had just stopped in a cafe.  And, they we started walking and came by the cafe where he was assassinated.

I had the good fortune of living over two years in France.  You are right that about how every town in France seems to have a place or street named for him.

    Brel's song is so good.

Too bad we don't remember Debs in this way.

    •  good fortune indeed! (0+ / 0-)

I get over there as much as I can - about an annual 3-week trip.  Love the culture, the food, the countryside, the people.  Oh yeah - there's that wine too.  If I had figured this out at a younger age, would likely live there, but it's too hard to uproot now.  Sturggling for minimal functionality in the language - hard when you start from scratch past 50.
And ditto about Debs - I have a copy of one of his campaign buttons that I put on at times during political season.

"Wouldn't you rather vote for what you want and not get it than vote for what you don't want - and get it?" Eugene Debs. "Le courage, c'est de chercher la verite et de la dire" Jean Jaures

      •  I have more than functional ability (0+ / 0-)

I had the good fortune of picking grapes en famille in the Gironde and the Charente.

I met my German wife in a youth hostel.

I got a degree teaching English as a second language because I thought I would be living in Germany.

I think I can still leave and if things went bad last Tuesday I was going to explore the possibility.  I worry about health care, but I think I could live in either Germany (even Berlin) or France outside of Paris.
