    it won best picture in 1938.  i have never seen it.

    i think at that time, racial/ethnic and religious bias was not really seen as a big problem.

    i remember reading about a poll from around the time of WW2 in which something like 40%, iirc, of americans thought jews did something to germans to warrant persecution.  public opposition to accepting jewish immigrants and refugees was about 60-70%, and, iirc, something like 50% of americans thought jews were greedy and not like other people.

    in a segment about military's preparation of repeal of don't ask don't tell, rachel maddow mentioned that a poll of military in 1940s (in preparation of integration) showed that about 45% of soldiers had anti-semitic views.
