  •  There are filings for St. Lucie now, too. (5+ / 0-)

    Here's what I've found:

The relevant case numbers are on the St. Lucie Clerk of Court's page, here.  There are two pdf files.  The complaint, stamped with the judge assignment, is here.  There have been more forms filed, including Patrick Murphy's motion to intervene, here.

The case has been assigned to Judge Dan L. Vaughn,  on Florida's 19th Judicial Circuit.  He's based at the county seat, Ft. Pierce.  Judge Vaughn did his undergraduate work at the University of Georgia, and went to the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University for his law degree.  He's been a member of the Florida bar since 1984.  His term is a six year one, ending in January 2015.  I know he's been re-elected to the bench -- he was on the court the year my mother died (2007), so he went up for re-election in 2009.

There's not a lot of data available on Judge Vaughn on official sites.  Here's what I can tell you about him.  Vaughn was a couple of years ahead of me in high school, so I was never in his social circle.  I do remember him as being very serious and a real straight arrow.  A lot can happen in 30+ years, though, and I 'm not sure of his political affiliations.  The legal community in Ft. Pierce is very close-knit.  The attorney my sister and I used for Mom's estate settlement, for example, had good things to say about Vaughn, and this particular attorney wasn't one to mince words about his peers.  It's not that big a town, and it can be more than a little Southern in feel.  I'm pretty sure Vaughn will rule on the merits and follow the law.  And that's not going to mean good news for West.

My wife practices in the area, and I'm familiar with Judge Vaughn. I think you're pretty close to the mark, and with the PBC ruling, there's a precedent here.

He's got a full docket Tuesday, so this will go Wednesday unless they move something around.

I discovered something else hilarious in that filing, but sadly I can't comment on it here. It doesn't bear on the case at all, just a random and ironic personal connection to someone named in that Pro Hac Vice filing.

You're absolutely not kidding when you say it's a small legal community. ;)

Murphy motion, that's some GREAT stuff. I think I'll try to head up to this hearing, whenever it is.

I wish I wasn't so far away, I'd love to be in the courtroom when Judge Vaughn delivers his smackdown.
