I'm an art historian and I teach in Rome.  I've become fascinated with the history of the Jewish community in this city, which has existed here continuously since approximately the 2nd c. BC.  I've included in my lectures on Roman architecture site visits to the Jewish Ghetto in Rome, which has a fascinating history.  I always indicate the placard  describing the deportation of Roman Jews to the concentration camps on October 16, 1943.  But there are other instances of the humiliation and torture of Jews in Rome's history, particularly in the Renaissance under Pope Paul IV, who had the Jewish community live within closed gates (like Warsaw in WWII).  Men had to wear yellow berets and women had to wear yellow veils.

Even when they are historically distant, it's important to educate others on all instances of antisemitism, in order to understand its recurrence, in order to remain vigilant against it.

Life in the Ghetto was full of kicks:

Jews had to petition annually for permission to live there... Each year, on the Campidoglio, the Rabbi had to pay homage to the chief of the city counsellors ("Caporione"), receiving by him in exchange for it a kick to his bottom. This "ceremony" meant that the Jewish community had been allowed to stay one more year in Rome.[9]
      9. ^ This tradition was interrupted by Pius IX in 1847.
