after spending years as Attorney General in New York prosecuting prostitutes and johns.

As for this one, no idea, unless some laws were broken that I don't know about.

was as the chief legal/law professional for the state and what he did was illegal in NY.  Prostitution is still illegal in the state of NY and johns are equally liable as prostitutes.

Similarly, in Petraeus' job as the head of Foreign Intelligence at the CIA, a security clearance requires that you don't have any of these security blemishes on your record.  The breaches of security are extensive.

In neither of these cases were the issues "moral", they were more pragmatic -- examples of how their actions went completely against the grain of their jobs.

(Its like the case of the Professor at Gualladet University who was the chief diversity officer signing a petition against gay rights/marriage equality in maryland.  She's entitled to her beliefs, but if her beliefs are counter to the very purpose of her job (protecting the civil rights of all employees at the university), then she can't do that job.)

The reasons for the resignations in these cases are not excessive Puritanism, but pragmatism.
