  •  They thought they only needed their base (13+ / 0-)

The thing about Karl Rove's playbook is that it has never been about attracting as many Americans as possible.  It's always been about agitating their base into voting, by playing on their fears.  Fears about gays.  Fears about foreigners.  I think the aim was just to motivate 50%+1 of the electorate into voting for Romney.  As Romney said in the infamous video, he didn't care about 47% of Americans.  He wrote them off as lazy-ass trough feeders.  Their feelings didn't matter, because he wasn't trying to get their votes.  So what if they were insulted.  They wouldn't vote for him anyway.

Somewhere they got the idea that "Conservatives" were numerous enough that they could achieve the 50%+1 goal by appealing to them alone.  However, over time, the Republican's definition of "conservative" became so radical and restrictive that they were appealing to a smaller and smaller proportion of the American population.  Their strategy and absolutism will certainly hurt them nationally.

It's a cautionary tale for any political party.
