  •  our true Founding Principle: kiss up, kick down (0+ / 0-)

The Puritans set that tone pretty early, and the slavers made it a cornerstone of society.

R-Money/R-Ayn, the ENRON Ticket, is not a campaign; it's a hostile takeover bid.

Long and Dark the Cruel Road Carries

...The Bushies are informed by a harsh ethos, a Twilight Zone version of the Elect, where no one is saved, no one is happy, no one is godly, and everyone is desperately afraid of being found out for being in hock to their eyeballs -- but no one is about to stop, no one is about to repent, and no one dares step out of line, lest they be suspected.

It's a worldview that assumes that happiness is something that must be jealously asserted and possessed, and that there are those who deserve this highly-qualified bliss and those who do not.

It's a very problematic perspective that has a long and tragic pedigree...

there has been a war between personal happiness and collective cruelty throughout American history, and collective cruelty has most often prevailed.

And yet, the retreat, the delight, the honor and the appeal of American culture has never been these bouts of mass paranoia that the individuals might get away from the crowd or, worse, transcend them in any way.

The cruel herd is about emulation, about pretense, about feigning the good things in life without internalizing a single one of them -- to go through the motions of charity, of goodness, of kindness, of delight in the achievements of others, of appreciation for all that is wholesome and beautiful in this world.

The very notion of such things is a damnation to the hardened pharaonic hearts of the cruel herd, an accusation of all that they are not, when alone in the dark: You are not saved, you are not worthy, you are not part of any God's plan, save as opponents.

And every part of the cruel herd knows this to be true, and hates everything that is not part of the same cruel game.

For this reason, dissenters must convert, or perish. For this reason, there can be no abiding tolerance for difference and diversity. For all to be able to feign success in comfort, all must be in fact miserable and bound by the same chains.

And per Drinnon, this paradigm came into force in a violent and premature birth, the sport of which flourished regardless, in a fashion worthy of Grendel -- by consuming everything and everyone that stood in its way.

To defy the callow beast is death.
