    Much of it could be put in present tense.

      That was the point I was getting at with the country emerged from the 1960's, blacks had legal equality but were still in exactly the same socioeconomic position they had been under Jim Crow.  But because they had legal equality, social conservatives and their enablers convinced the country that the blacks were truly "equal" now and there was no need to do anything more.  They basically told blacks "you're on your own."  So progress since then has been slow.

      Are blacks better off than they were in the 1960's?  Sure.  But so are whites.  That's what happens when you have technological progress and the quality of life improvements that come with it.  Is racial equality better now than it was then?  Of course.  But not by nearly enough, and not because of anything social conservatives did.

      Preaching to the choir and then shooting them when they don't sing loud enough isn't a good strategy for increasing the size of the congregation.
