It's a big deal that CIA agents don't have affairs. Petraeus is in a different position, but it just didn't look good.

There could be more to this story - one thing that is annoying Dems as well as Repubs on the intelligence committees is they weren't informed that this was going on (unless this all came up in the last few days).

This story will be kept alive, there are certainly likely more details, but at this point it looks like Petraeus will be the main victim.

White House intel staff was briefed by the FBI on Wednesday.

Obama was briefed by Director of National Intelligence James Clapper yesterday, and he then called Petraeus to the White House where he offered to resign.

Petraeus was just (presumably, Wednesday or Thursday) informed by the FBI of what they'd discovered.

          per other accounts.

of course,he knew he had been having the affair it's just that he found out he had been bagged.

FBI surveiled his emal for a period of time and found "steamy" emails including one about having sex under his desk.

The affair ended months ago and per FBI, there had been "thousands" of emails from petraeus to her trying to get her back.

Richard Engel told Rachel Maddow last night that petraeus was not well liked in the CIA and it was someone from the CIA that brought the FBI in.

So at the end of the day, the "man of honor" resigned because he got bagged. If he truly was honorable he would not have had an affair but even given the benefit of the doubt for a second, if honorable, he would have resigned months ago or not even accepted the CIA position.

In the end, patraeus is no different than John Edwards. Big ego, no self-control and thinks he can get away with anything.

If it is true about him sending thousands of emails to get her back, it's scary that someone that unstable was director of CIA.

mittens=edsel. no matter how much money is spent to promote it, if the product sucks, no one will buy it.
