    ...say the unpopular thing:

Mitt Romney was a dick, but saying no one liked him - even metaphorically - is a little lazy at best. 58 million people liked him enough to vote for him. And sure, you can argue that many just hated the President, but even giving you half, that's still 29 million people.

The part that makes me wince is the "no one liked him" part. No one? 58.48 million people - 47.9% - is "no one"? Didn't we all pick up our jaws when a certain tape of Romney saying something similar came out?

I get it: winning is awesome. But we have a tendency to climb atop the nearest tall thing and not just beat our chests (and rightly so) but also denigrate the competition. I'd like it if we could remember that Mitt Romney and his cronies were the competition, and a great many people - millions of them - were not. They were just voters who picked the loser.

I would like it if - for once - we didn't throw out the baby with the bathwater, whereupon the right wing is waiting with open arms to manufacture the next Tea Party.

Think of it this way: what if Rush Limbaugh went on the radio and said that apart from the 39% of white voters, no one liked Obama?

      no matter what.

there are people who hated O and voted for mittens for that reason only. these are the hold your nose and vote for mittens crowd.

from exit polling done in '08 it was determined that 6-8% of those that voted said that they would never vote for a black man and I am not sure that this is not different than those who voted for mittens only because they hated O.

$2.5 billion spent by mittens and superpacs against O surely impacted the vote totals even if by a percentage or two.

fact is we will never know for fact but there were not 58.8 million people that voted for mittens because they liked him, not even close.

mittens=edsel. no matter how much money is spent to promote it, if the product sucks, no one will buy it.

...the number of people who like Mitt Romney would still not be zero. As I said, 58 million didn't vote him because they liked him, but enough did.

The point here is not about Mitt Romney's likeability - we already know that's for shit. It's about his voters' reach-ability. I reject the oft-repeated notion around here that they are all unredeemable scum who should never, ever be engaged with in any other context save that of irreconcilable enemies.
