    ... interesting idea.

And yes, her background means she should damn well have known what she was doing.

One of two things is true:  Either he seduced her, or she seduced him.  One of them made the first move.  And both of them knew damn well that it was way way the hell off-limits.

This sort of thing should face much heavier penalties for people who have had all the advantages, because a) they damn well should have known better, b) with advantages go corresponding responsibilities, c) to send the message that the upper crusts are not immune to getting trimmed from their bread and dumped in the compost bin, and d) for deterrence value, which has to be a key element of any form of punishment.

    •  Donna Rice and Gary Hart ... (4+ / 0-)

Rice was Phi Beta Kappa, from UNC, I think, and claimed not to know who Gary Hart was, when he was only the most visible prominent Democrat of the time.

I always thought that was fishy.

When that happened, I thought, "there goes the election."

Strictly speaking from a cognitive science point of view, the fact that someone is a high achiever in the brains and/or muscles department, doesn't mean that they're correspondingly way-above-average in the emotional judgement department.  Obama's way ahead on all of those, which is exceptionally rare: genius IQ, physically fit, and emotionally healthy & self-disciplined.

In the WW2 & Cold War era, Americans prized being smart, strong, and sane.  Something slipped since that time: probably the lack of an existential threat sufficient to promote darwinian selection in its strictest sense, and its replacement with "social darwinism" as a perverted substitute.

    •  He aparently invited her to Afghanistan (4+ / 0-)

after they'd met earlier (in the US I think). I imagine it's much easier to have an affair in the war environment, far far from home. They say, in articles I read, that rumors of affairs had dogged Petraeus for years.

    •  Seriously ! (7+ / 0-)

You're a married mom, OH, AND a Military/International Security Expert and no little shoulder angels warn your conscience that just maybe screwing around with THE top US General while IN THE MIDDLE OF A WAR THEATRE might be an iffy choice ? Let alone actually compromising international security but also your own family. This is simple stuff, I can't grok it.

        Both his hormones and hers.

It would not surprise me if the Pentagon was at this very moment opening up a study on the feasibility of having spouses and partners accessible to key people in war zones.  (Understood there are force protection issues with that, but none the less...)
