    •  We know war. We never want to fight it. (2+ / 0-)

Our history is an admixture of violent heroism and long periods of benign neglect. Sound familiar? That's why I think we're disproportionately liberal. (And becoming more so.) Our politics do not define us, except to allow our continued existence, but we are ordered to support our Commander-In-Chief no matter who he is, and we tend to get more respect from those who want to avoid war too. (By the way, even including the cost of our Navy support, we're the most cost-effective of the US Armed Services.)

We like to joke about fighting war: "Peace is our profession. War is just our hobby."  We talk tough, profane, war-mongering speech. It's mostly bluster and bluff. It's designed to intimidate, to deter, and to support each other if the shit goes down. To avoid war by this method is far preferable than actually waging it.

But if the shit really does go down...we are trained to kill. Each of us, even those who are not in the infantry, are trained to be riflemen (and rifle-women, I might add.) We're not cops, or assassins. Iraq and Afghanistan are actually terrible for us - Marines, like all soldiers, do worse the longer we stay in the battlefield, and fit poorly in patrol. We aren't taught to distinguish between un-uniformed bad and good guys.

We are sea-soldiers, with all the good and bad that entails. We know it, and are mostly honest about it. We are true to ourselves, and actually train that fear is normal. What you do with it is not allow it to lead to panic, to paralysis. We make scary progressives... because we are so damn hard to frighten.
