  •  That's painting with a fairly broad brush (27+ / 0-)

I think Frum (who supported Romney) understands why "we" (yes, I'm a Republican) lost.    I think Sullivan understands why  "we" lost.  I think I understand why "we" lost but, of course, I, a lifelong Republican, voted straight Dem this year and so I think America won this year.

I understand what you are saying here but the language you use is absolutist like the Republicans.  There is a decent minority of Republicans who think that "our" party has gone pretty crazy but we are a minority.  Sadly, I spend more time here at DKOS saying Republicans are pretty crazy instead of trying to go to right wing websites to try to convince my side to return to sanity.  So maybe I'm not too bright!

    •  And very glad to have you here (10+ / 0-)

I'm not sure you would have gained much traction talking with the right wing at this point.

They seem to be deeply frightened of something, some image of a twisted, broken, post-Obama America that they can't get out of their heads.

This is not the sort of thing that can be turned around with quiet reasoning, I fear.

    •  I like Frum... (0+ / 0-)

I disagree with him frequently, but not always.  He is rational, at least the great majority of the time I read him.

My political journey has not been a flat line...perhaps yours isn't either.  As I've grown older, I've become more liberal.  Maybe you have too, or maybe the Republicans have grown more conservative and you've stayed the same.

      •  It kinda of turns that old saying on it's head (0+ / 0-)

doesn't it?  Growing up I heard this saying that if you were conservative when you were you were young, you didn't have a heart.  If you were liberal when you were older, you didn't have a head.

Apparently I'm a stupid, cold hearted dick because I was conservative when I was younger and I'm more liberal as I grow older.  I still call myself "conservative" because my first inclination is not to have a federal program to solve a societal problem.    First show me how the program has worked at the state level.  Then show me how it has been repeated in several states.  If it has worked as liberals say it would then we should give serious thought about expanding it to the nation.

Overall it's been a humbling experience.  When it comes to math, I'm well within the top 1 percent and my IQ is right around the top 3 percent.  But I've been wrong so many times when it comes to politics.  To err is human and I've displayed that in great abundance.
