  •  I think it will be classified as an assassination (11+ / 0-)

related joke rather than an actual threat.

This woman's twitter account is filled with similar types of idiocy.

you would think that with all the retarded liberals aborting their babies by the millions we would have more Godly people voting
    What a loser.
    •  Like airport security (11+ / 0-)

There are some things you don't joke about. Joking about taking a bomb onto an airplane at the airport isn't free speech, it's a felony. Joking about murdering the duly-elected president of the US should be the same.

Republicans can cry false equivalency all they want, but I don't recall liberals ever calling for W's assassination. All we ever wanted to do was to give him & Cheney a nice, free, one-way ticket for an extended vacation at The Hague...

      •  Nah. (0+ / 0-)

It's abominable, and all that. This woman deserves to be spit on by her fellow citizens. But I don't want to live in a country where people are locked up for merely joking about someone getting killed. Does anyone here actually think this Laura person is preparing to be the next John Wilkes Booth?

        •  Dear God, do you ever stop? (2+ / 0-)

You'd wait until millions were thrown out of work before you'd investigate CEOs for revenge layoffs. How long would you wait to investigate if someone might be a threat to the President of the United States or anyone else in our government? Until shots ring out?

There's concern trolling and there's despicable. You've managed to combine the two concepts in a handful of diaries this morning. Congratulations!

doc2 said "I don't want to live in a country where people are locked up for merely joking about someone getting killed."  I agree with that.  There's a big difference between checking someone out to see if they're a threat and just locking them up for saying something outrageous.

            •  The Secret Service has to check ALL threats (5+ / 0-)

People who are "just kidding" need to knock this shit off. Until they do, they'll never disassociate themselves from the truly unhinged. Throwing them in jail for 30 days to think about their sense of humor--and how maybe it needs a grown-up tune-up--would be a public service to the rest of us.

..."The Late Late Show With Crag Kilborn", airing on CBS, ran a gag spoofing the VW "drivers wanted" ads which consisted of a graphic of Bush at the GOP convention with the subtitle "snipers wanted".

What prison sentence do you think would have been appropriate for Kilborn and/or his writing staff?

                •  A more relevant example would be helpful (0+ / 0-)

once the reader understands that Craig Kilborn is a known television personality and the tweet in question is from someone that until now no one knew anything about.

And for all you know, the SS came calling over it and realized....the guy's on a comedy show, broadcast nationwide! So....try again, please.

                  •  Okay, here's a few... (0+ / 0-)

(Sorry to link to a right-wing site, but I don't think legit media hyperventilate about this kind of stuff.)

A few examples of recent tweets:

"I propose we kill Romney. Simple and sweet,"

"if obama loose we can't do anything but kill Romney (sic),"

"If Obama doesn't win the election I swear to God I'll go to the US and kill Romney with my bare hands,"

"I hope John Wilkes-Booth reincarnated and is ready to shoot Romney if he wins this election (sic),"

The people who wrote those tweets are idiots, but I don't think they need to be jailed.
                    •  None of them are threatening Mr. Obama, either, (0+ / 0-)

                      are they?

                      What else you got?

                      •  They are threatening... (0+ / 0-)

...an individual who is under the protection of the US Secret Service. So, the question is, how much jail time do you recommend for the people who made those threats?

                        •  No, they aren't. (0+ / 0-)

Mittens SS protection ended on Election Night.

Again, relevant examples are helpful. Why not just admit you don't have any?

posted before election night, then they should be investigated and tossed in the clink, too.

Thirty days. That's what I said from the beginning. Were you really paying attention or are you just being contrary on behalf of your concern troll friends?

...scare me, regardless of which side of the aisle they're from.

As for the "concern troll" nonsense, I could point out that YOU are the one who seems overly-concerned about something that is, in all likelihood, utterly inconsequential.

those of us calling for an end to threats against elected officials--utilizing, say, the drunk tank, until they realize how socially unacceptable advocating violence is.

You should fear those making the threats. What the fuck is WRONG with you?
