Some pundits are saying that Tony Bennett got defeated because Republicans were against "Obamacore"--or the combination of Race to the Top and the Common Core Standards.

I saw a panel yesterday on Cspan from the Heritage Foundation, which included a journalist from Education Week and some big reform supporters, including a very clueless young woman. The Bennett issue was brought up. Also, how very progressive and very conservative wings are the most against common core. I am not completely against it, yet, but as I said, Im wary. Very wary.

On the Cspan show, the EW reporter, who has been on this beat a long time, looking into reform's impact, said that it has become clear to her that it is very difficult to find a wilingness among most parents to join in the teacher-bashing-punishing (evaluation reform) bandwagon. They tend to like their kids' teachers. The reform movement hasnt gained much support from them. Struggling here.

      That was NICE to hear!

Now, the clueless young reform hopeful was not to be set back! She said that while it would be hard, she felt they should and could find ways to convince parents that hanging this evaluation Sword of Damocles over teachers' heads, day after day as they toil away, is a GOOD thing! And, she said that although tricky, there are also ways to get teachers to come on board - to sign on to their own self sabotage! This, she said, in honeyed tones...

Should a "progressive" Dem blog dwell in the safe zones of a lame party, or should it drive a lame party to break out? If it cant, should it break out?
