The Bible is not a scientific textbook.  It is a great work of literature, an eye on how our ancestors lived and thought at the dawn of history, and is in part - at least the latter part of Second Kings and Second Chronicles - a history of ancient Israel.  If you believe in its Divine origins, then you study it for its ethical message.  That a medical doctor such as Congressman Broun, with all his education, can believe that the world in 9,000 years old despite its scientific and historical absurdity, boggles the mind.

There is no conflict in the rational mind. The Bible is made up of allegory, legend, parable, genealogy, and tribal laws, to name a few. Much of it was not written comtemporaneous to the events described. And let's not forget that there are other traditions just as deeply held with there own sets of writings.

I want my physician to be ethical, but I much prefer that he have an MD rather than a DD. In the case of Congressman Broun, he may be unfit for public office if his reasoning skills are that lacking. We need reality-based governance.
