  •  Frankly I think a lot of the OT is just crowd (4+ / 0-)

control. A red tide happens and the powers that be say "God said don't eat the shellfish". Trichinosis becomes rampant and the holy guy in town says " Uhh, god told me that we shouldn't eat pork". Crowd control.

    •  Think many of the rules laid down (4+ / 0-)

in Leviticus were just that kind of thing. Rules that that particular society lived by.

Funny how the rules that governed a fairly small and insignificant community on the east end of the Mediterranean has had such a huge impact on western and Islamic societies for thousands of years.

Now if we could just get the Fundies to quit cherry-picking Leviticus to justify their own particular brand of bigotry.

      •  If they couldn't justify their bigotry (0+ / 0-)

with Leviticus, they'd justify it some other way. Christians - including fundamentalists - are taught that Jesus 'fulfilled' the laws of Moses and instituted a new Law: Love God, Love One Another (the "do unto others" thing predated him (and Hillel) by a long shot).

Some people are just haters. Haters hate - it's what they do. By their deeds we will know them, and we do.
