• ##### Mind blowing measure....(9+ / 0-)

Astronomers recently figured out the average distance between stars in our Galaxy.....4,150 light years.....

So, if you started at one star and traveled the average distance to another, you would have to travel the distance light travels in 4,150 years at a speed of 186,000 miles per SECOND.

That would be about 6 TRILLION miles per year and you can do the rest of the math by multiplying that by 4,150, as long as you understand base 10 nomenclature.

That's a s...tload of miles.   Be sure to bring some snacks.

• ##### is that true(8+ / 0-)

four thousand light years? that cant be true, right? I mean in our star neighbourhood stars are every few lightyears there. And we are here some way far out in the galactic rim, in the center where the most stars are there they are also much much more closer packed. I seem to recall very faintly some figure for the dross section of our galaxy to be ??? hundred fifty thousand light years?? could be wrong, but not by many orders of magnitude. Then you could only fit 40 or 50 stars across the whole length of the galaxy! That is obviously not right.

or did the comment mean the sign "," as a comma, as we do here, and it means 4 and a bit light years? that I would find much more believable (though still way high!)

• ##### Average distance(6+ / 0-)

of 4,000 ly between stars in the universe (not galaxy) would seem to make more sense.  I'm just guessing.

There is a lot of (seemingly) nothing in those spaces of space. Stay on the arms, closer in than farther out, then they are "close." At the galactic rim or between the spokes, 4000 LY is just next door, I think.

Not the average distance between a given star and the closest star -- the average between all stars.

Proxima Centauri is "only" 4 light years or so away from us, but there are other stars in our galaxy that are hundreds of millions.

Isn't that what the comment means?

In the Milky Way Galaxy alone, there are over 100 billion stars. The disk of the Milky Way is about 100,000 light-years in diameter and about 1,000 light-years thick. This means the average distance between stars is over four light-years.
I hope that helps clarify.
