El Cerrito High School, 1963, Right before the BEatles era.
Ive always been proud of that.
Wasn't hippie style either, it was greaser style but it came down over my collar.  Blue jeans were aginst the dress code, girls had to wear skirts or dresses.

So us Boomers DID accomplish something

Also suspended for wearing white bell bottom Levis and again for wearing Apache boots (knee high moccasins).

White-collar conservatives flashing down the street, pointing their plastic finger at me..

One of the biggest surprises in my life was learning that the lrrps had been renamed to Rangers in june 1969. This happened after I was out of the army and had somehow slipped off the Army's Christmas Card list.
I didn't find out untill I read Shelby Stanton's Rangers in Vietnam. Up untill that time I was like: who were the Rangers in Vietnam? I never heard of them! Then I found out I was one.
They grandfathered all the old lrrps into the Ranger Association, now I'm a Ranger
WOW!! I mean Rangers are something really special in the Army because they go through a real 12 week long hell training, which I did not.  I went through Recondo School in Vietnam---2 and half weeks and then I'm back in the field again. Believe me, I NEVER would have said I was a Ranger to anyone, not having that shoulder patch. And now I am one. I still sort choke on saying it, so I usually just say I was a paratrooper when people ask. With 43 jumps I can say that just fine.
it was funny going from having done a job you had to explain to one thats quite legendary. same job same pay, different hat. Weird.
but you know any old 101st vet is going to show up for the whoopdedo and free barbecue. Cool Ranger Tshirts we get too, I wear em to the gym to wow the tattooed freaks. They get respect!
Here's a pic at the RAnger monument in Ft Benning GA at the Ranger reunion, '11. they put on anice little ceremony for us. I am in the first row kneeling on the left. I won't miss one of these again! Love hanging with these guys, theyre every bit as wacky as they were back in The Day, just we don't have all the guns and explosives a growing boy could ever want. Love golfing with them after being in combat with some of them---its an eerie feeling. The guy Ive got my arm around I have jumped out of airplanes with, been on patrol with, was pulled out with a Maguire rig with one night. Now we're trying to twoputt.
      What a long strange trip.......

"I wanna be an Airborne Ranger
I wanna live a life of danger..."
been there, done that, got the t-shirt
