  •  It pays decently for a part time job (11+ / 0-)

I worked for Papa John's as a driver 15 years ago. I was older than the typical driver, for me it was a second job. We got minimum wage plus a flat amount per delivery and any tips the customer gave. No mileage reimbursement or gas money.

It actually was pretty good money for a part time job, most of which are minimum wage and  but have no tips. Or the poor restaurant pukes making tips but getting sub minimum. (How that scam can be allowed to continue I have no idea.) It beats the hell out of your car, but the car I had at the time was crap anyway so I didn't care.

But like I said, for me it was a part time second job. Don't ask me how anyone could have made a living doing that.

    •  Just imagine if Papa John (4+ / 0-)

had to pay for the cars, their upkeep and insurance just to get their pizzas delivered!

    •  I worked out the math. (0+ / 0-)

Domino's was hiring and I was unemployed and desperate.  The problem is that the cars I've owned reliably generate $1400-$1800 in repair and replacement costs for every 12,000 miles driven.  A four-hour shift, three hours of driving at 20 mph would generate at least $9.00/day in repair bills plus 2 gallons of gas.  These days that comes out to about $16.00/day.  Minimum wage being $7.25/hour, net income is $8.75/shift plus whatever tips come in -- and said tips were not guaranteed.

At $2.20/hour, dumpster diving is more profitable.

for a major chain that I won't disclose the name, but it rhymed with Pizza Slut.

I was paid minimum wage and $2.00 per delivery, plus tips.  The only drawback was they would wait until 3 or 4 deliveries were in the "same area" so I only got 1 "per delivery."

Shame on  me, but I lied to customers as to the final total on the pizza (by a buck or two) and pocket the difference plus the tip.  Only way I could survive that period of my life.
