  •  A History of Bombing by Sven Lindquist (8+ / 0-)

shows how totally inept air attacks are. They kill an inordinate amount of civilians. Obama's approval of drone attacks is a mind-bogglingly bad idea that borders on war crimes. Our political leadership, Democrats and Republicans, have approved of bombing raids that mostly kills civilians, for decades now. Evidence from Kosovo showed that less than 5% of the targets we thought we'd hit actually ended up getting hit. We were fooled most of the time. The vast majority of those hit were civilians, mostly Kosovars and some Serbs. Infamously, we hit a civilian train at one point mistaken for a tank column. Even worse, the ordinance we use is banned by the UN and even the USA. Cluster bombs (i.e. colorful balloon like balls attached to bombs chiefly dismembers and kills children who think they are toys) and DU-tip bombs (depleted uranium, that despoils the environment for thousands of years and causes birth defects and cancer.

It's a woefully bad idea to use drones.

It's way the hell on the other side of it. But is just now the right time to discuss such matters? I was reliably informed that bringing this up during the campaign was a sure-fire way (no pun intended) to cause Obama to lose the election.

But now, I reckon that we're all supposed to be too happy about the ringing victory of the Democratic ticket to concern ourselves with suchlike. Why be such Debbie Downers about drone strikes? It's just going to harsh everyone's mellow.

Maybe in a couple more years. It's just a bunch of people in Yemen and Pakistan being summarily executed, after all. And a lot of them (we are solemnly assured by the government that denies the program even exists) are very, very bad people. So, you know, there's that.

This whole thing sickens me more than I can say.

The first I heard of them was less than a week after Obama took the oath of office when drone attacks happened in Pakistan..., the third country I know of where congress has NOT met to formally declare war, most notably, not a defensive war.

I was horrified.  Still am, since he's continued the practice.

The last "justified" war in which the US participated after a formal declaration of war on the part of Congress, the only body in our country that CAN authorize or declare war, and the only body that can authorize the money to pay for war, was WWII.  After that, NO ONE has been "fighting and dying for our freedoms" because NONE of the other countries were ever a threat to us, and there was NO formal declaration of war (Congress' AUMF for a president is not a formal declaration of war).  The jihad declaration of war on the part of a little band of criminals who have no formal allegiance to any country (Al Quaeda) does not make for the beginning of WWIII, or GWOT as Dumbya/Dickie wanted.

I'm sick of attempts to steer this nation from principles evolved in The Age of Reason to hallucinations derived from illiterate herdsmen. ~ Crashing Vor
