around 25 I think for lame duck

    •  They're going to try to get this (6+ / 0-)

tax deal done now to minimize the political fallout for both parties.

The "dead-ducks" can vote for a tax increase with little liability.
The rest...  hope the confusion of if it's 112th or 113th Congress acting will buffer some criticism.

      193 + 25 = 218

But, if a few die-hard tea-partiers want to protect themselves, they'll be out on the golf course during the vote. Boehner won't complain, their voters can't say they voted for a tax increase... so it might take just 202 votes or so.

      •  Good point (2+ / 0-)

I've heard that some of the sore losers probably won't be coming back for the lame duck.

        •  I posted elsewhere (2+ / 0-)

That I get the feeling this deal was cut months ago.

Boehner and Obama knew something was going to have to be done.

Now that both sides know the end result of the election, Boehner and the GOP know they have to "give".

Obama is smart enough to do it in a way to save Boehner's political face (he still has to work with him).

All we see right now is keeping the non-matured people in both parties from over-reacting.

Both these guys want to end this fight quickly, and move on to other issues they know they can work together on.
