Much of what you forecast occurs only if one of the splintering factions of the Republican coalition adopts a hard populist program while muting the social issues concerns.  Such a new party might attract many from the Democratic coalition who have eaten too many cat food dinners because of fiscal cliffs and austerity being crammed down their throat.  Could the Republican emigres bring themselves to accept Democrats who don't agree on social issues, given their authoritarian bent?  That topic likely will fuel graduate degree studies for many decades as we move forward.

    •  Dems jumping ship ? (0+ / 0-)

Sounds like you and others here are envisioning blue dog-styled Dems jumping ship to the GOP to join a centrist-friendly faction on that side.  Is that the most likely/frequent scenario, or will this GOP faction recruit these types (what I am calling Red Dogs) from its own ranks?  The latter is my assumption, but either way it will be interesting fer sure.

      •  Actually Not Very Centrist (1+ / 0-)

I wouldn't envision the faction being discussed as being centrist.  It would actually be more left-of-center, since it would exhibit a very populist sensibility.  It might be centrist on social issues,  but it would be quite leftist on economic issues.  From that perspective, it would appeal more to green dog Democrats than blue dog.  The blue dog Democrats are more likely to break for the corporate focused Republican faction.
