bloc until ~'79 with the creation of the moral majority.  after the Scopes Monkey Trial in 1925 fundies were so butthurt at the general ridicule they received from the non-fundie/batshit US populace they withdrew very much into the whole be-in-the-world-but-not-of-it thing.  Then Carter agreed with the IRS about taxing private religious schools and, to make a long story short, poof: Fallwell & Co.

If progressives can ever figure out how to downplay the whole science-as-means-to-discovering-reality thing (yeah. right.) there is a very large vein of untapped populist ore among the fundie/evangelicals.  Huckabee started to tap this and it really did scare the GOP monied interests.  Currently, abortion, teh gays and evolution are, by far, the biggest fundie/evangelical boogeymen.  I don't know if they'll ever lighten up on abortion but if progressives can make inroads on gay rights(i.e. humanity) and general science issues, at heart progressives really do share some common idealogical interests on issues of opportunity and environmentalism.

My mom, whose conservative christian street cred stomps ralph reed's any day, said a few months ago she thought it probably wasn't right the amount of profits being made on natural resources god put on earth for all of us.
