  •  Moderate isn't the right word...more like Realists (5+ / 0-)

I see the GOP factions as

    -The Money
    -The True Believers (evangelicals)
    -The Tea Party idiots
    -The Realists

The Money funds the whole operation and the Realists are supposed to be steering the ship. The Evangelicals need to be placated, but they are relatively easy to manipulate. It's the rise of the erratic Tea Party idiot faction has thrown things out of whack.

Clearly by now the Money has realized that the Tea Party's single issue platform of rabid anti-Obama-ism - while useful in the short term - isn't a viable long-term strategy, and they're now looking to the Realists to come up with a gameplan to get things back on track.

The Realists (who don't necessarily have to be moderate) surely understand that a faction of 20-25 GOP congressman and 5-7 GOP senators can cut the non-realists out of the loop, and negotiate on even terms directly with the White House (who needs a GOP faction to get anything done) on behalf of the Money.

Making Obama look bad is no longer a priority. The priority now is re-branding the GOP party to Hispanics and young people. There's an that the True Believers will still be there come 2016 because all they really care about is appointing conservative justices to SCOTUS to overturn Roe v Wade, and a calculation that the Tea Party idiots can be drawn into line with effective marketing strategies.

The Evangelicals have the leadership clout to start their own party, but that doesn't really serve their ultimate goals. The Tea Party idiots are certainly crazy enough to start their own party, but I don't think they have the established leadership to break away. The Money will certainly be attempting to buy up influence within the party and steering the message towards the Realist agenda.

Ultimately, the GOP Civil War won't boil over until the next Presidential primary season and both nutjobs factions will ensure no realist makes it through unscathed. Ever thus.
