with a party of racist assholes.

Slate never considered that, did they?  No, to Slate it's just two sides, equally moral and right, both hatin' on each other.  The grown ups are in the middle being all grown up and responsible, according to the beltway dorks at Slate.

crap? Lazy, stupid and cowardly people, who want to avoid incurring the wrath and be on the good side of the side they still perceive to be dominant side, by being seen as tough on what they still perceive to be weaker side.

This is just like high school, where the weak kids tried to ingratiate themselves with the popular kids by being mean to the unpopular kids. (Well, Hollywood's version of high school as this was not my experience of high school.)

Every time I hear a pundit or journalist repeat a false meme such as this, or deny a demonstrably true one such as that Repubs are trying to supress the vote, I want to hurl something at the TV. They can't possibly be too stupid to know that what they're saying is false, I think (although I realize that many of them are, in fact, literally this stupid). Either they're afraid of being seen as too friendly to the left or tough on the right, as if that mattered in the slightest in their particular profession, or they're trying to ingratiate themselves with the right by beating up on the left to maintain their standing in the Village, or they lean right themselves, and deliberately bias their opinions to match their leanings.

      I.e. lazy, stupid or cowardly.
