  •  I read one of her books and never tried another (10+ / 0-)

Ayla turned into a paleolithic Mary Sue, plus I found it unbelievably annoying that ONCE AGAIN we have a perfect character who's a blue eyed blond.  Can we once, just ONCE, have a dark skinned, brown eyed, black haired character who's perfect??????  Please?

    •  I think L.A. Banks has a vampire hunter (3+ / 0-)

like that. An African American Mary Sue.

At least Ayla is living in Ice Age Europe. I am surprised there hasn't been one by somebody about the exodus from Africa with a blonde heroine.

where the hero did one of those dominant rape themes--a la Dagny Taggart--and the heroine, a "fiery feminist archaeologist excavating at Knossos kept raving about breasted ewers proving iit was a matriarchy. At that point I kind understand the hero's desire to get her to STFU.

Certainly there were MATRILINEAL societies, and soemone actually has found the origin of the Amazons/female warriors stories, and certainly some societies afforded women more opportunities than others ( Haroun al-Rashid's Baghdad had female physicians, imams and judges who, granted, only cared for women--but in Europe most women weren't even literate yet). Just because there's a Mother Goddess doesn't mean women have superiority, or equality.
