the past, say, 4 or 5 redistricting cycles.

There has never been a gerrymander the likes of the current disgusting mess vomited up by the most corrupt legislature we've seen in generations. The only thing Repukes can hang their hat on is NC-12, Mel Watt's district, and that was originally drawn much more compactly by Democrats, only to be turned into what it was turned into by the George HW Bush justice department during a series of Voting Rights Act lawsuits.

When the Democrats last drew districts in 2000, the Census had given North Carolina an additional district, and the only blatantly partisan thing they did was to make sure that the 13th district was theirs, so they drew NC-13 for Brad Miller. That was it. The 107th congress was 5D-7R, and the 108th congress went to 6D-7R.

After making it to 7D-6R most recently, we are now, all of a sudden, 4D-9R (or possibly 3D-10R if McIntyre can't hold his ~400-vote lead after recounting), solely due to Republican gerrymandering.

I truly tire of the false equivalency about this that Republicans whine about constantly; it's even worse when Democrats fall for and perpetuate that lie. Democrats have never done anything the likes of what Republicans did in 2011!

I agree with you that the Democratic bench is weak and they need to do something. Just the past two Governor's races expose that weakness: Beverley Perdue was somewhat unpopular before she was elected partially on President Obama's coattails in 2008 - even among Democrats - and Walter Dalton was unknown outside of "insider" Democratic circles and his region of the state (the very Republican west).

Having said that, Walter Dalton was an excellent gubernatorial candidate, and would have been far better for the state overall that the phony blowhard Pat McCrory that was placed into office by the massive money bombs from Americans For Prosperity and our very own "Koch Brother", Art Pope.
