  •  I've said before, (9+ / 0-)

If the Republicans' behavior after 2000 showed us anything, it's that winning = mandate, regardless of margin.

Bush certainly claimed to have a mandate. I remember thinking how crazy the Repubs were when he had barely won. Somehow winning does equal mandate in many people's minds.

We had a vote on a controversial issue at our church. Outcome was 80-79. The winners have claimed for a year or more now that this was a clear vote that the congregation wanted this to happen. One more vote and the president could have broken the tie the other way. Our was not a mandate and neither was Bush's "mandate" in 2000.

      •  he didn't win the popular vote nor possibly (0+ / 0-)

even the electoral college, for what we know now

Bush in 2000s mandate was no better than Gores in my mind.

so maybe even worse than your 80-79 victory.
        get what you mean though

    •  I wish Obama or a serrogate would actually say (0+ / 0-)

that when asked if they had a mandate?

"well, Republicans behave as if they have a mandate whenever they win...and even sometimes if that fact is debatable"
