  •  NC-02 was a R+2 district, that became R+11 (0+ / 0-)

..after redistricting. That's why she won by the 15 pts. And it's also why NC is going to be a tough nut to crack for the foreseeable future.

    •  Population growth in NC will start to turn (4+ / 0-)

the red districts in the Triangle and Charlotte suburbs purple, with NC-9 (52-46 race in 2012) and NC-2 (56-41 race in 2012) being the likeliest ones to grow into swing districts in 4 to 6 years.

Republicans did a masterful job of gerrymandering NC in 2011 and picked off 3 congressional seats and 10 legislative seats, but like many other parts of the country, they are fighting an ever-rising demographic tide.

Filibuster reform now. No more Gentleman's agreements.

      •  Also, redistricting is still in the NC courts (1+ / 0-)

A coalition of civil and voting rights groups -- including Democracy NC, the NC NAACP, the League of Women Voters and the NC A. Philip Randolph Institute -- filed a legal motion claiming that the political districts approved by the Republican-led NC legislature disenfranchise black voters and are asking the courts to declare the lines unconstitutional.

Of course, with conservative Justice Paul Newby being re-elected (with the help of a lot of outside money), the NC State Supreme Court’s 5-4 conservative majority remains intact. But even if the judges refuse this motion, the larger legal challenge will proceed to the next stage: a hearing toward the end of the year.

However, with the Supreme Court potentially weakening or even gutting the Voting Rights Act, we may run out of options after that.
