Including the side that is to the left of the President. Give him a way to compromise that is more center-left than right/center-right. Fiscally, his positions start out center/center-right and become 'leftist' in the media because there is only one opposing view being discussed. Where do you negotiate from there?  I didn't vote for that.

I believe the question was, "Where is the Democratic response?"  It sounds to me like you're frustrated because you're listening to a media outlet that only presents the Republican side of the story which is pretty much all of them.  That's something you should take up with them.  Ask them why they don't present more than one side of the story.

      •  Because the democratic position (0+ / 0-)

Is not articulated by leaders to the press in the same way.

It's a circus only.  It counts for nothing.  If you want to know what's happening with fiscal matters, you're better off reading the congressional record and cross reference to the CBO.  Statements politicians give to the press aren't to be taken at face value.  Watch what they do in Congress, not what they say in the press.  Remember Pelosi floated the idea of raising the lower tax rate expiration to a million in income instead of the $250,000 that has been Obama's mantra. Everybody turned on her in an instant.  Months later in an interview she said it wasn't her real position.  She was just feeling for any signs of support, consent, agreement, life?  Meaning --- on the other side.  Trying to guage whether there could be a threshold where Republican unity might fracture.  It's part of the sport.

The Democrats have the upper hand.  The Republicans have nothing but bluff and bluster. The Budget Control Act is Public Law.  It says that the automatic budget cutting sequestration must come from the discretionary side of the budget, defense and non-defense.  The non-discretionary side can't be touched.  That's Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, SCHIP.  That didn't happen by itself or by accident.  It took manuevering by Obama and Reid to get Republicans to pass it, even though it's the opposite of what they want.

The Republicans desperately want to scrap the BCA (that they voted for) and the Democrats can make them sweat it out.

The 2010 Tax Reduction Reauthorization is going to expire and take away the lower tax rates at all income levels.  That means higher tax rates on income under $250,000, an end to the unemployment extension and payroll tax cut.

The public is anxious because it anticipates an unfavorable swap. O Ye of little faith.

The President won't deal with this session of Congress.  The clock will run out on the end of the year.  It's not a cliff.  It's just a new year and a new session of Congress with a slightly more favorable mix of players.  There may be some Republicans in the new session who are willing to play along.  There's no way to reinstate anything lost by the under $250,000 earners without some of them coming along.

Don't forget that the Affordable Care Act includes a 3.8% rate hike on capital gains with an exclusion for the first $250,000.  It also includes a 0.9%  payroll tax increase with an exclusion for the first $250,000.

Through it all the media will have its own agenda.  Unless you enjoy being mentally and emotionally abused for their profit, steer clear.
